"Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory."
Psalm 98:1 (NKJV)
Do you enjoy singing? I'm not good at it, but there's hardly anything I enjoy more than signing praise to our God!
One thing I've been trying to exercise is worshipping God with my own words. Have you tried? It's hard for me. But as we see in this verse, God not only enjoys us singing songs of worship many times, He also enjoys hearing new songs, because He has done many marvelous things for us!
Here are some ways I sing a new song to the Lord.
Quote From Psalms
Psalms is filled with many psalms of songs! When I worshipped with my own words in church at free worship time, I struggled to bring things to mind that I hadn't already said.
When I studied some psalms, however, I was able to remember more about God's character and what He's done for us! For example, I often pray Psalm 145 when I'm joyful, or to turn my focus to God's goodness. You could pray phrases from Psalm 19 to praise God for His creation, or Psalm 37 to thank Him for His help to you. You could even go further and look for other songs in the Bible, such as Mary's in Luke 1.
Write A Song
I communicate best through writing. In fact, my conversations would probably go a lot better if I wrote them out on paper. This is also part of why I struggled to sing a new song.
About a year and a half ago I began writing my own songs. I write out my praise, then put music to it on my piano or guitar. When I write my own songs, it brings a deeper meaning to my worship, because it's based on my experience, and focuses on the marvelous things God has done in my life!
Will you join me in singing a new song this week?
