So Big Yet So Small
We live in a spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. It is nearly 100,000 light-years across. Just to give you an idea for how huge that is, if a human were to cross a light-year in a space shuttle, it would take them around 37,000 years. Do you know that big bright star called the sun that everyone’s always talking about? Well, other stars such as Betelgeuse would consider our sun “average size”. Betelgeuse is around 700 times bigger than the sun, and a whole lot brighter. That is unbelievable! That isn’t even it! The largest star in the Milky Way is called UY Scuti. Is nearly 1,700 times bigger than our sun. From earth it just looks like an average star. Did I mention that our galaxy is also home to 100 billion planets? The Milky Way is just one in over two trillion other galaxies. Now think about the planet we live on. Little 3,958.8 mile earth. Then think about you, and the 8 billion other people that live on earth. I said all of that just to show you how big and great God is, and he cares about you!
When I Consider Your Heavens
God is so majestic, David writes about this majesty in Psalm 8:3-4.
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
When I read this verse, I can imagine David lying in a field, surrounded by sheep, looking up to the heavens. Size wise, David was just a speck swallowed up by a massive universe. But, God had a plan for that speck. David couldn’t have even realized how big what he was looking at was. Yet, he was still in awe. He was in amazement of how the God of trillions of galaxies was mindful of him. David may have never truly understood the answer to his question, so instead he proclaims the majesty of the Creator of the Universe once again. One thing is clear, God had a plan for David. No matter how small he felt, he was not small in God’s eyes.
So Much More
David was so much more than a speck to God, and so are you. Even though the heavens declare the glory of God,(Psalm 19:1) He didn’t choose the stars to bear His image, He chose mankind. There is a divine destiny written on every heart. The point is, He chose you! The God of a trillion stars appointed you to do His good work. No matter how small you may feel, you are not small in God’s eyes!
